Will Bodybugg Revolutionize the Way We Lose Weight?

Fans of The Biggest Loser might have noticed the contestants wearing a little device on their arm: the Bodybugg. The Bodybugg is available for purchase at 24 Hour Fitness or Apexfitness.com. Bodybugg is supposed to monitor your activity level through sensors on the device and determines how many calories you have burned, in order to help you lose weight.

This armband plugs into a computer via a USB cable, where it uploads the data onto the internet. Dieters log what they eat onto the computer and compare it to the Bodybugg data of how many calories they have burned. This helps participants to lose weight.

Will the Bodybugg monitor help someone lose weight? While some people are happy with the system, it still takes work to use. The dieter still has to count calories and log everything that they eat. The old-fashioned method of losing weight is still what matters: in order to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you eat.

The Bodybugg is not cheap. The Bodybugg costs $249 on the 24 Hour Fitness web site. It comes with a six-month subscription to the Bodybugg web site, but there’s a catch. You have to continue to pay for a subscription to use the device. The renewal prices run from $14.95 a month if you pay month to month with a recurring payment, to $99.95 if you buy a year in advance.

People do lose weight by using the Bodybugg. Perhaps the reason they lose the weight is not that the device they are wearing tells them how many calories that they are burning, but because it serves as a reminder that they are trying to lose weight. They still have to track how many calories they are eating. The Bodybugg removes the need to track how many calories they are burning. That is all.

A study by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine discovered that dieters that kept a food diary tended to lose twice as much weight as those who didn’t. Bodybugg users also have to track high protein low fat foods that they eat, perhaps their weight loss can be attributed to the food diary, not the expensive device that they wear.

The Bodybugg might be the hottest new diet trend since Atkins or Alli, but it is not a miracle device. It might encourage people to exercise more by providing a positive response to their efforts, but the old formula for weight loss remains. Perhaps keeping a food diary, exercising more, and attempting to eat less than you burn is the best way to lose weight after all. With or without an expensive device.
